The Certification
What is a Blue Flag certified beach?
A Blue Flag is one of the world's most recognized eco-labels for beaches — awarded season by season by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that clear a strict bar on four fronts. It is a promise about the water and the way a beach is run, renewed every single year. Here is what it actually means, and how to read it on this map.
We currently track 12,972 beaches across 50 countries, of which 5,230 hold current Blue Flag certification (2026). The rest are honorable mentions and Certification Candidates — never blended with the certified list.
Water quality
Bathing water is sampled through the season and must test as “excellent” against strict microbiological limits. This is the criterion travelers feel first — it is the reason to trust the swim.
Environmental management
The beach is managed to a plan: clean sand, working facilities, protected dunes and habitat, waste and recycling handled, and no unlawful discharges nearby.
Safety & services
Lifeguards or clearly posted safety equipment, first aid, clean drinking water and toilets, and accessible routes so the beach works for everyone who arrives.
Environmental education
Posted information about the local ecosystem, the water-quality data itself, and activities that teach visitors to protect the coast they came to enjoy.
Certified is not the same as a candidate. A beach on this site either holds Blue Flag certification for a stated year — verified against the official national award lists — or it is a Certification Candidate, our own editorial designation for a beach that looks the part but carries no flag. We keep those two facts strictly apart on every page, because the whole point of a certification is that it means one specific thing.
