The Great Lakes hold a fifth of the planet's fresh surface water — and the same certification standard that flies over the Mediterranean flies here too, because excellent water is excellent water. This is the field guide to the third coast: certified freshwater beaches on the Canadian shore today, and the US towns working toward Blue Flag certification tomorrow.

Five lakes, one standard

  • Lake Superior

    The largest freshwater lake on Earth by surface area — cold, clear, and ringed by wild shoreline in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario.

  • Lake Michigan

    The only Great Lake entirely inside the US, with dune-backed sand from Indiana's national lakeshore to Wisconsin's harbor towns.

  • Lake Huron

    Georgian Bay's turquoise shallows and Ontario's Bayfield-to-Bruce coast make Huron the quiet connoisseur's Great Lake.

  • Lake Erie

    The warmest and shallowest of the five — Ontario's north shore towns like Port Stanley and Port Burwell fly certified flags over its sand.

  • Lake Ontario

    Toronto's harbour beaches lead Canada's certified freshwater roster here, minutes from the skyline.

21 of Ontario's freshwater sites hold Blue Flag certification (2026) in the seasons we track — town beaches and marinas from Lake Erie's ports to Toronto's harbour.

The US shore — eight states, watching closely

No certified Great Lakes beaches on the US side in the data we track for 2026 — the American chapter of the programme is young and ocean-first so far. As freshwater towns from Duluth to Rochester meet the standard, they'll appear here as Certification Candidates first, flags second. We're watching Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Are there Blue Flag beaches on the Great Lakes?

Yes — we track 21 certified freshwater sites (beaches and marinas) across the Great Lakes states and provinces for the 2026 season, led by Ontario, Canada. Each listing shows its exact certification year.

Do US Great Lakes beaches hold Blue Flag certification?

Not in the data we track for the 2026 season — the US chapter of the programme is young, and its certified beaches so far are on the ocean coasts. That is exactly why we watch the third coast: US freshwater beaches that meet comparable water-quality standards are marked "Certification Candidate" (our editorial designation, never a certification claim) as they are added.

Does freshwater certification use different criteria?

No — the same standard applies on fresh water as on salt: excellent bathing-water quality confirmed by sampling, lifeguarding and safety provision, environmental education, and annual re-application. A flag over Lake Huron means what it means over the Mediterranean.
